Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati
Founded in 1994, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is a non-profit
public higher education institution located in the the suburban setting
of the large city of Guwahati (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000
inhabitants), Assam. Officially accredited/recognized by the Department
of Higher Education of the Ministry of Human Resources Development,
India, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) is a small
(enrollment range: 3,000-3,999 students) coeducational higher education
institution. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) offers
courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education
degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in
several areas of study. This 23 years old H.E. institution has a
selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. The
admission rate range is 70-80% making this Indian higher education
organization a somewhat selective institution. International students
are welcome to apply for enrollment. IITG also provides several
academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a
library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, financial aids
and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, as well as
administrative services.
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT
fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT
Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven
departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all
the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering
BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes. Within a short
period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced
research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and
engineering instruments.Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus
is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the
river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the
majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on
others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning.
The 74,000 square metre Academic Complex houses the academic
departments, centres, their laboratories, classrooms, etc. A spacious
Administrative Building accommodates the offices of the Institute. The
Computer and Communication Centre houses a modern Computer Centre and
Central Library. A lecture hall complex with four lecture halls, each
capable of seating 250 scholars and an auditorium of 1500 capacity
provide space for teaching and holding various events/programmes. The
Sports Complex comprising of an indoor sports stadium with synthetic
badminton, table tennis and squash courts, gymnasium and the Students
Gymkhana office, an 8 lane 50 m long swimming pool and flood-lit playing
fields for all major outdoor games provide ample scope of recreation
for the campus residents. A 72-room Guest House, ample faculty and staff
quarters, married students’ flat-lets, eight men’s and one women’s
hostels with single occupancy rooms make the residential component of
the infrastructure. The Institute also has a hospital with 30 beds, a
commercial complex with a restaurant and several shops and two community
halls. A Conference Centre with a provision of 4 halls (2 halls with
150 capacity and 2 halls with 200 capacity) and a food court is nearing
completion.
Other facilities include a campus wide network on a Gigabit Ethernet
backbone with access points in every hostel room, an internal EPABX,
high capacity internet connections (including access from residences),
two banks with ATM facilities, a post office with Railway Passenger
Reservation facility, a pre-primary school-cum-creche, a Kendriya
Vidyalaya and a bus service to the city.
All faculty and staff members of the institute are provided with PCs. All these computers are hooked on to the campus network. Most of the office work is automated with a view to improve efficency and reduce the use of papers. Internet and e-mail facility are provided through leased lines.
The Central Library, one of the important central facilities of the Institute, currently has a collection of over 1,17,000 items including 2605 subscribed online journals and magazines.

Research is an integral part of the activities of Indian Institute of
Technology Guwahati. The Institute conducts researches within its
academic programmes under all the departments and the academic centres.
Its faculty members also conduct research projects sponsored by various
government agencies and companies. The aims of theses sponsored
researches are varied starting from the advancement of theoretical
knowledge to development of new technology to solve practical problems.
The sponsored researches conducted till now has covered areas such as theoretical and applied aspects of core science (physics, chemistry and mathematics), social sciences, information and communication technology, electronics, artificial intelligence, material science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, alternative energy, environment, water resources, structural and earthquake engineering, geotechnical engineering, chemical engineering, heat transfer, machine design, manufacturing, product design, etc.
Sponsored research in the Institute has contributed in terms of development in knowledge and technology. It has also helped to bring the academia closer to the industry. In addition, it has added to the infrastructure of the Institute through acquisition of modern equipment for the research projects. The research projects have also acted as the training ground for the young post-graduates just out of the universities. The Research and Development Office is the wing of the Institute which facilitates, channelizes, records, and regulates as per the Institute rules all the sponsored research projects and consultancy works in the Institute. The Research and Development Section is administered by the Dean of Research & Development.
